King Tut Drank Red Wine, Researcher Says - Yahoo! News:
"LONDON - King Tutankhamen was a red wine drinker, according to a researcher who analyzed traces of the vintage found in his tomb. Maria Rosa Guasch-Jane told reporters Wednesday at the British Museum that she made her discovery after inventing a process that gave archaeologists a tool to discover the color of ancient wine.

'This is the first time someone has found an ancient red wine,' she said."

CNN.com - Police: Winning lottery ticket purchased with stolen credit card - Oct 28, 2005:
"MEDFORD, Oregon (AP) -- A woman bought a winning lottery ticket worth $1 million with a stolen credit card and could wind up with nothing if convicted, police said.

Christina Goodenow, 38, of White City in southern Oregon faced numerous theft-related charges, forgery and possession of methamphetamine, said authorities, who searched her home Thursday. The card belonged to a deceased relative, they said.

If convicted of any of the charges, Goodenow will not be able to collect prize money from the winning ticket, said police Lt. Tim George."

CNN.com - Body hanging from tree mistaken for Halloween decoration - Oct 28, 2005:
"FREDERICA, Delaware (AP) -- The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging from a tree went unreported for hours because passers-by thought the body was a Halloween decoration, authorities said.

The 42-year-old woman used rope to hang herself across the street from some homes on a moderately busy road late Tuesday or early Wednesday, state police said.

The body, suspended about 15 feet above the ground, could be easily seen from passing vehicles."

CNN.com - Lower 9th Ward like a surreal movie set - Oct 27, 2005:
"NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- I'll admit it. I wasn't prepared for what I saw. And I can only begin to understand what it was like for the people who lived there.

On Thursday, I rode along with residents from the devastated Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans as they toured the area by bus.

For some, it was the first chance to see their homes, their neighbors and their belongings. But they weren't allowed to get off the bus. This angered some; others knew there was simply nothing to salvage."

MAKE YOUR OWN PRUNO AND MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL.

MAKE YOUR OWN PRUNO AND MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL.
My brother recently told me about a friend who once worked on an offshore oil rig off the Gulf of Mexico. He said they would stay out there for weeks on end, baking in the hot sun with absolutely nothing to do in their off time--a problem made doubly difficult to handle because of the policy of prohibiting alcohol on the rigs.

One way that workers overcame this tedium was by drinking Aqua Velva, the alcohol-based after shave.

According to Wikipedia:
"The alcohol content of original Aqua Velva was high enough to actually inspire US sailors in World War II to use it as a substitute for alcoholic beverages. The flavor was improved either with vanilla extract or orange juice, but still left a soapy aftertaste in the drinker's mouth."

I also recall reading an article years back about how homeless vagrants would buy those little canisters that have that petroleum-jelly type stuff you light up to heat food, etc., and consume that to get a buzz. Apparently, quite a few people had died as a result, so this was a fairly big problem at the time.

In any case, it's amazing the lengths people will go to in order to catch a buzz.

The World's Smallest Car

The World's Smallest Car
Using the parts inside a single molecule, scientists have constructed the world's smallest car. It has a chassis, axles and a pivoting suspension. The wheels are buckyballs, spheres of pure carbon containing 60 atoms apiece.

It'd be a real squeeze to take it for a spin, however.

The whole car is no more than 4 nanometers across. That's slightly wider than a strand of DNA. A human hair is about 80,000 nanometers thick.
